The End of November

By Sheri Yutzy

O beautiful desolation
The ice of emptiness
Trees bereft
Creeks heavy with cold
White sky growing from
Dark to dark.

The brown grass
The stark black leaves
Rotting in corners
The surprise
Of green parsley.

O cold hearted landscape
The barricade to spring
Prison of soil
Frozen hope.

The frigid song
Of a winter bird
Flight of ashes.

O burn-healing balm
The melancholy peace.

A still pool of waiting calm.
