Red Clay

by Gary Yoder

Red clay—
Red Virginia clay,
Pounded hard as iron
By chained feet:
We are made of common stuff,
This Dixie clay and Dixie dust.

Red clay—
Red Virginia clay
Cracked and breaking
Under a southern sun
Without mercy:
We are made of this,
We bear its hardness,
Its need for gentle rain.

Gary is a composer, writer, artist, and passionate lover of beauty.
