How I Have Loved Thee

by Phoebe Anthus

How I have loved thee,
how the world unwound,

when your voice, lay we
in the silent ground,

hanging—

like a dependent clause.
So do I leave thee,

sacred in the light which was,
you shall pass on

towards what is yet to be.

Phoebe Anthus is a stubborn artist with her head not so far into the clouds that she cannot notice the solid, sensible things as well.

  1. Every now and then a poem grabs me through some undefinable combination of meaning and music. This was one of those!
