Lament of Orion

by Sherri Steiner

Orion strode up from the eastern ridge.
The tree-lined rim of earth gave up its grasp
upon his heel, and he arose in time
to chase the summer stars into the west
and turn September mornings into fall.
One dawn, while keeping cattle on their course,
I heard an echo irresistible
as he marched whistling, hunter and his dog.

Then looking up, I saw the rise of fall
and I awoke, and found my summer gone.

Taught by country life and students, Sherri is learning to love both the dramatic and the mundane.
