Lamentation

by Myra Wollman

The crocuses are blooming and the snow is falling
and it is by your mercies that they are not consumed,
that their blooms are not entombed,
that if we search we can still find this sign of spring
unburied by the cold. The snow
keeps falling but I know it can’t stay
because your compassions they fail
not. The weight of this cold will be lifted
and the tulips will grow. This I know, they will bloom.
And it is by your mercies that I am not consumed.

Myra Wollman lives in the cold north, where she spends her days in the classroom and her nights looking for comets in the starry sky.
