Reflection on the Bayou

by Mary Boyde Funches

As the bayou’s small ripples make mild mayhem
They are new and always the same
Each swift-leaping fish and swift-diving bird
Add new directions of disturbance
That collide and pass over, under,
In shimmering, changing sameness.
Then the wind shifts and the pattern does too,
But only a little, as slant sunrays
Reflect in ochre, mustard and pale pink
In the texture that is always and never the same.
