Nehushtan

by William Hoover

I keep God in the pocket of my mind,
A million moving parts with zero play.
It’s no small task to keep it all aligned.

This goodly duty which all are assigned:
Constructing who He is, or how to pray.
I keep God in the pocket of my mind.

With joy I add each shiny truth I find,
A puzzle I take out and put away.
It’s no small task to keep it all aligned.

Some have a golden watch they need to wind,
Some have a soft mouse they train to obey;
I keep God in the pocket of my mind.

There is reward in all this careful grind,
For knowledge is the key, I always say.
It’s no small task to keep it all aligned—

So many facts. For instance, He is kind.
Of course He bears my burdens every day.
I keep God in the pocket of my mind;
It’s no small task to keep it all aligned.

William Hoover considers himself fortunate: he spends his working hours immersed in either numbers or words, and sometimes both simultaneously.

  1. One of those creepy glimpses of subtle insanity: nice job! The brooding, stream-of-consciousness repetition made me think of the song “Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass. In this case perhaps you could say it’s “Calvin on the Beach.”
