Hunger
by Josiah Peachey
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…”
This hunger for more
Scratching at the window
Scraping at the door
Crawling from corners of abundance
Worming out of thick stacks of books
Nibbling at the edges of full meals
Baiting as emptiness builds
where is the salvation in starvation?
Staring from a wide window
Into the abyss
Wishing for all the world
For something beyond words
And beyond grasping
what makes manna feel like fasting?
Living out this hunger to its end
Yelling like a young bird
With a wide mouth
For the Bread of Life
“we remember the fish in Egypt…”
Robbing the sleep from exhaustion
Murmuring into the quiet of rest
Touch of drought in the drench of rain
Too much happiness can be pain
Set my life to bite like a trap
On the hope that is here
And is coming again.
